Restoration - phase I

In October 1997 we received a grant of £68,000 from English Heritage which allowed Phase 1 of the scheme to begin in October 1998

  • Experimental work in trying to remedy the damp penetration by re-plastering one interior corner with a special mix

  • The complete overhaul of the tower roof coverings, including the provision and fixing of new hand-made components.

  • The replacement of lead gutter linings to high level parapets, together with associated tiling works, flashings and upstands.

  • The provision of a new asphalt covering to a selected flat roofed area, including new insulation, and the appropriate execution of new upstand and cover flashings to wall and parapet abutments, and gutter.

  • The repair and repointing to selected areas of masonry.

  • The formation of sheet metal overflow spitters to existing parapet gutters, together with associated works to rainwater goods.

  • The repair and protection of selected windows, comprising repairs to saddle-bars, lead cames and glazing, including the provision of purpose-made stainless steel wire guards.

  • The removal of selected areas of timber panelling, and plasterwork for further inspection, treatment as required, and careful re-fixing.
