Saint Paul the Apostle
The celebration of his conversion is on 25th January and the celebration
of Saints Peter and Paul co-founders of the Church is on 29th June
Saul the Jew was a tent-maker by trade. He hated and persecuted Christians
as heretical, even assisting at the stoning of Saint Stephen the Martyr. On his way to Damascus to arrest another group
of them, he was knocked to the ground, struck blind by a heavenly light, and
given the message that in persecuting Christians, he was persecuting Christ.
The experience had a profound spiritual effect on him, causing his conversion
to Christianity. He was baptized, changed his name to Paul to reflect
his new persona, and began travelling and preaching.
Collect for the conversion of Saint
Paul
Almighty God,
who caused the light of the gospel
to shine throughout the world
through the preaching of your servant Saint Paul:
grant that we who celebrate his wonderful conversion
may follow him in bearing witness to your truth;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
